if you happen to notice a really loud, really pretty, extremely varied song being sung by a bird in north america, then the chances are you're hearing a mockingbird, especially if it's singing through the night. they mimic other birds and their repertoire can include from 50 to 100 different songs, each one repeated a few times before a new one is sung. on the branch, these birds are rather plain, but their song is spectacular, and when they take off in flight, their wings and tail will flash white at you. mockingbirds have long tails and slender beeks, and eat all sorts of foods including insects, fruits, seeds, and even small lizards. they're very protective of their homes and will attack intruders. they will send a call out and birds from neighbouring territories will come and help in the attack!

the one i watched and listened to this morning didn't have wings as dark as this. it was pretty uniformly pale grey.

this photo is from above, but the flash of white is just as pronounced from underneath. it's a good way of identifying them.
